Gateway Peer Advisor
Location: Gateway Career Center; Hogg Hall Floor 2
Overview
Our Gateway Peer Advisors are campus leaders who meet with students to help with basic career development tasks; resumes, cover letters, navigating and using Handshake, resource connection and review. They primarily conduct walk-in sessions with students and act as liaisons between the Gateway staff, and the greater Lafayette community. This hardworking group of students have demonstrated unique career successes, have leveraged Gateway programs and resources, and share in our passion for helping students explore the possibilities and find their paths.
Responsibilities
- Help students during drop-in sessions with resume and cover letter reviews, provide advising for Handshake usage, and connect students with additional Gateway information and resources.
- Facilitate Handshake workshops for First-Year groups meetings.
- May participate in workshops and programs showcasing the Gateway Program, including but not limited to: First-Year Gateway orientation meetings, Family Weekend & Admissions events, networking programs, and our annual career fairs.
- Assist in developing strategies to raise student participation in Gateway. This includes an individual project, developed and implemented by the peer advisor, focused on a career topic or issue of their choosing.
- Provide active feedback on programs, events, and our dynamic career resources.
- Serve as liaison between the Gateway Career Center and the student body, with special focus on strengthening relationships with student clubs and organizations. Communicate messages to students as well as relating critical and timely information.
- Act as an integral component to Gateway’s ongoing marketing efforts and strategies.
Desired Skills: Sophomores, Juniors eligible to apply. Demonstrated use of Gateway Career Center resources and programs, strong attention to detail, interpersonal skills, and communication.
Hours per week: 2 – 5 hours/week
