POCC Interns have been hired from college campuses all across America. Arriving in early June & working thru late July, interns work directly for United States Senators or House Representatives in their Washington offices in the halls of congress or for policy analysis firms within walking distance of Capitol Hill. The summer experience includes staff briefings, tours of government buildings, installations, and historical landmarks as well as private meetings with high-ranking government officials.
In addition to the positions themselves being paid, intern’s airfare to/from Washington D.C. and summer housing are covered as well.
These positions require a professional wardrobe as Capitol Hill is a professional work environment. Exact details of the job vary by hiring office but interns can expect to be engaged in constituent interaction – answering phones, replying to letters and email, etc., assisting in legislative briefs, attending committee meetings and hearings among other responsibilities. Internship position are open to all majors as well as undeclared.
This program provides a level of access, resume enhancement & personal network-building typically reserved for a privileged few attending elite universities. POCC Interns have come from small community colleges in Texas as well as Ivy League schools in the northeast. At this time positions are only available to ethnic-minorities, though as funding expands we anticipate opening the program to all American college students. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, citizens of the United States and able to pass an extensive background check as is necessary for any & all positions in the U.S. Congress.
