Molly is an Environmental Paralegal with Marathon Petroleum Corporation, one of the country’s largest oil refining, marketing, and transportation companies. As an environmental paralegal, Molly’s main role is to research and stay current on EPA regulations that would effect how Marathon does business, ensuring Marathon stays legally compliant with all environmental codes.

My name is Molly O'Connell and I am an environmental paralegal for the Marathon Petroleum Corporation. I research, a lot of research, with the Federal Register. I monitor the Department of Environmental Agencies for states. I monitor state laws and regulations and legislature on what's coming ahead for environmental issues, and I collaborate a lot with different groups within the company, such as the Rails, the Terminals, the biodiesel group, all these up and coming environmental issues as we deal with climate change and impacts to the environment and how Marathon is going to better the environment. We have a responsibility at Marathon to clean up areas that have been impacted by an oil spill, or a landfill, or a leaked storage tank, an underground storage tank, which stores waste product from petroleum. And so as the land sells or has environmental issues, I help come in, do the financial budget with that, and make sure that permits and funding is available for that project and oversee that with the project managers. Initially we get a notification from the EPA or the state agency that we have been in violation and we take the requirements that the state has put upon us, and we go through and we make sure we meet those requirements. So when we know the requirements that are needed, we can then properly fund the project and make sure that we have the equipment and the personnel to clean up that site and make sure that it's environmentally sound and there'll be no other issues with it.
